Two Capacity Building Workshops on "Strategies of
Inclusive Education for Children with Disability"
were held on 21 to 23 December and 27 to 29
December, 2010 respectively. CAMPE organized both
the residential workshops in cooperation with Civil
Society Education Fund (CSEF) and Centre for
Disability in development (CDD). The objective of
the workshop was to raise awareness of the Teachers'
Union representatives about the importance to
include disable children in formal education system
and to exercise the roles and responsibilities of
teachers to ensure inclusive education for the
disabled children. A total of 50 representatives
from Government, non-government, Teachers'
Union and Community Watch members along with CAMPE
staff members participated in the workshop.

Participants attended in group work in some sessions
like 'Develop Supporting Materials'; 'Create
Accessible Environment' etc. for children with
disability. The sessions contributed in enhancing
participant’s awareness level about the
requirements/special needs of children with
disability in the classroom, the process of disable
friendly classroom facilitation, ensure
accessibility, and providing supportive devices.
There was a school visit component included in the
session which demonstrated the process of
application of the learning in real life situation.
The team visited "Prodip School" which was funded by
'Dark and Light Blind Care - The Netherlands' under
the supervision of CDD. The participants talked to
the students of the school, observed the process of
education which was very useful experience for them.

The expectation was to create a more positive
attitude of teachers across the country towards the
children with disability as well as to increase the
awareness and capacity of the teachers about their
roles and responsibilities for including disabled
children in formal education system through the
workshops. After participating in the training
workshop, the participants expressed their views in
such a way that this training program was a
necessary requirement for every teacher to include
the disable children in formal education system.
They also mentioned that most of the trainers in the
sessions were disable person that helped to create
inspiration among the teachers and also would help
to be more committed to their responsibility. The
participants also told that Government, Society,
Parents, Administration all are included with the
activities of education. They suggested to include
them all in discussion, to make them aware and to
work together with commitment for ensuring inclusive
education in Bangladesh. They also mentioned that
they now believe that inclusive education is not
only important for the children with disability, it
would also be helpful for all the children in the
class. Through the workshop the teachers are now
capable enough to build an environment where a child
with special needs can continue his/her education
like other children.
