Major Highlights

Education Watch Report 2009-10 Launched
(Sunday 17 April, 2011)

Exploring Low Performance in Education: The Case of Sylhet Division: the Education Watch Report 2009-10 was recently launched by CAMPE on 17th April 2011 in a colourful ceremony organized in association with FIVDB at Hotel Nirvana Inn, Sylhet, a divisional headquarter located in the north-eastern region of Bangladesh. The report highlighted the major factors behind low performance in education in this region. It also indicated a major deficiency in the planning process which tend to follow “one size fits all” policy. The decision makers and practitioners present in the meeting expressed their agreement with most of the findings and committed to bring about a change in this scenario. The study also focused on the girl child of this region who are usually the first ones to be deprived of state and non-state services. A series of demands, based on the findings of the study, were placed before the high level gathering. These include, inter-alia, better planning focusing on regional and socio-economic grouping based disparities, targetted interventions, more authority for local government and more space for involvement of local communities in designing and monitoring of EFA.

Mr. Nurul Islam Nahid, the Education Minister, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh was present as the Chief Guest. Among others, Mr. Suranjit Sen Gupta, MP, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Mr. Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran, Mayor of Sylhet City Corporation and a few Members of Parliament were also present. Ms. Rasheda K. Choudhury, Executive Director, CAMPE and Member Secretary, Education Watch chaired the session.

The launching ceremony was attended by nearly four hundred representatives from Government Agencies, National & International NGOs, Development Partners and Civil Society Groups.

The full report will be available soon at CAMPE website.
