PFM,
the GCAP Alliance in Bangladesh announces their 14 point Demand to
SAARC Ministers

People’s Forum on MDGs (PFM), the GCAP alliance in
Bangladesh announced its stand on climate change in
Bangladesh and the South Asia Region at a PRESS
BRIEFING on 3rd July 2008 at the Dhaka
Reporter’s Unity Conference Center particularly
keeping in view the SAARC Foreign Minister’s meeting
of 3rd July 2008.
The overall objectives of the Press Briefing was to
mobilizing public opinion and create a pressure on the
visiting SAARC members for addressing the climate change
issues seriously and effectively. This Press Briefing is
a sequel of the South Asian Civil Society Consultation
on Climate Change held on 13-14th January 20087 in Dhaka Bangladesh.
The press conference on climate change in line with the
MDG Goal-7 is a continuation of process to push forward
South Asia Regional issues on climate change with the
hope that it will be picked up by the SAARC Foreign
Ministers and pursued in the upcoming SAARC Summit to be
held in Sri Lanka. Dr. Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad, President,
Bangladesh Economic Association (BEA) and Chairman,
Bangladesh Unnayan Parishad (BUP) was the key speaker of
the press briefing along with SAFG and PFM members in
Bangladesh.
PFM Bangladesh presented 14 point demands to the SAARC
governments for immediate action and setting of
development and adaption strategies as climate change
threatens the socio-economic fabric of the region as
well as create SAARC Climate Change Fund to tackle
Climate Change.

World Environment Day Observed
(5 June, 2008)
Like
all other years CAMPE also observed the World Environment Day on 5th
of June, 2008. The theme for this year is "Kick the Habit! Towards a
Low Carbon Economy". The
2 day long (5-6 June, 2008) programme was organized by the Ministry of Environment & Forest (MoEF) on behalf the Government of Bangladesh. The programme included Rally, Seminars and Environment Fair.
Hundreds of people from Government Offices, NGOs, Schools, Colleges, Universities and Environmentalists joined the colourful rally. The
2 day-long Environment Fair was inaugurated by Raja
Debasish Roy, Hon’ble Special Assistant to the Chief
Adviser, Ministry of Environment & Forest at the Osmani
Memorial Auditorium. A stall was also run by CAMPE for
disseminating the environment related publications of
CAMPE and its partners. Raja Debasish Roy visited
the CAMPE stall and appreciated the initiatives of CAMPE for awareness raising on different environmental issues.

Sub-National Level Consultation on “Quality Education and Status of
Teachers” held

As
part of CAMPE’s plan to organize 6 divisional consultations on
“Quality Education and Status of Teachers” in collaboration with
different Teachers’ Association of Bangladesh, the consultation at
Rajshahi division was held on 11 May 2008 at the Rajshahi PTI
Auditorium. Renowned educationist and famous writer Professor
Hassan Azizul Haq was present at the consultation as Special
Guest while Dr. Ainul Haque, Bureau Chief, BSS Rajshahi and
Mr. A. K. M. Golam Mostafa, Assistant Director, Primary
Education, Rajshahi Zone was present as Guests of Honor.
Superintendent of Rajshahi PTI Mr. Rawshan Ali presided over
the consultation. Mr. K. M. Enamul Hoque, Program Manager,
CAMPE delivered the welcome address. Professor Nazmul Haq,
IER, Dhaka University presented the findings of a research work
titled “Status of Teachers in Bangladesh” conducted by UNESCO
Bangladesh. About 100 teachers from both primary and secondary
schools were present at the consultation and expressed their views
for ensuring quality education.

2.8 million people participated in the World’s Biggest Lesson in
Bangladesh!!

We
are happy to announce that the total number of people participating
in the glorious World's Biggest Lesson throughout Bangladesh, as so
far reported to CAMPE GAW Control Room, is 2.8 million. We
are yet to receive reports from organizations in some parts of the
country and assume that the total participation will increase by a
significant more number. People from all walks of life participated
in the Biggest Lesson, along with leaders, local elites and public
functionaries who vowed fresh commitments towards establishing
everyone's right to quality basic education and creating an enabling
environment as well. The GAW observing partners including number of
unconventional organizations and professional bodies like members of
law enforcing agencies, fisher folks in the coastal belt, indigenous
people, domestic child workers, organizations working with visually
challenged people as well as people from disadvantaged groups who
are downtrodden among the downtrodden organized the event in their
vicinity and reported by fax, e-mail and cell-phone messages of
which validations signed by local elites followed.

The
Asian South Pacific Education Watch Report Launched
(21 April, 2008)
The
Asian South Pacific Education Watch Report was formally launched on
21 April 2008 (during the Global Action Week for Education, 21-26
April 2008) at the LGED Auditorium, Level-2, Agargaon, Dhaka. Ms.
Rasheda K. Choudhury, Hon’ble Adviser, MoPME, MoWCA, MoCA, Govt.
of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh was the chief guest. Mr.
Kazi Rafiqul Alam, Board Member, ASPBAE, Mr. Malama Meleisea,
Director & Representative, UNESCO Bangladesh, Mr. Theo Oltheten,
First Secretary Education, EKN were attended as special guests.
Mr. Kazi Fazlur Rahman, Former Advisor, Caretaker Government &
Chairperson, Education Watch Advisory Board, Bangladesh chair the
session. A nine member delegations from the Asian and South Pacific
Countries were attended the session and present their specific
country Education Watch findings. Prof. Kazi Saleh Ahmed,
former Vice Chancellor, Jahangir Nagar University presented
Bangladesh findings.

Sharing Session of Education Watch 2007 (Draft Report)

A
multi stakeholder Sharing Session of Education Watch 2007 (Draft
Report) on “Secondary Education under General and Madrasa streams:
Curriculum, Learning Achievement and Employment Opportunities" was
held at the RDEC Auditorium of LGED on 8th April 2008. The sharing
session was jointly organized by Campaign for Popular Education
(CAMPE) & Education Watch Group. The Sharing Session was chaired by
Kazi Fazlur Rahman, Chairperson, Education Watch & Adviser, Former
Caretaker Government. Mr. Md. Azizul Haq, Director in Charge, CAMPE
welcomed everyone in the session. The major findings and policy
recommendations of the study were presented jointly by Dr. A. M. R.
Chowdhury, Convener, Education Watch Group & Principle Researcher,
Education Watch Study 2007, Dr. Umme Salma Begum, Research Team
Member, Education Watch Study 2007 and Mr. Samir Ranjan Nath,
Member, Education Watch Working Group & Co-principal Researcher,
Education Watch Study 2007. About 90 interested representatives from
civil society, government departments, researchers, teachers,
students, donor agencies, international organizations and private
organizations were present in the Sharing Session.
