PFM,
the GCAP Alliance in Bangladesh announces their 14 point Demand to
SAARC Ministers

People’s Forum on MDGs (PFM), the GCAP alliance in
Bangladesh announced its stand on climate change in
Bangladesh and the South Asia Region at a PRESS
BRIEFING on 3rd July 2008 at the Dhaka
Reporter’s Unity Conference Center particularly
keeping in view the SAARC Foreign Minister’s meeting
of 3rd July 2008.
The overall objectives of the Press Briefing was to
mobilizing public opinion and create a pressure on the
visiting SAARC members for addressing the climate change
issues seriously and effectively. This Press Briefing is
a sequel of the South Asian Civil Society Consultation
on Climate Change held on 13-14th January 20087 in Dhaka Bangladesh.
The press conference on climate change in line with the
MDG Goal-7 is a continuation of process to push forward
South Asia Regional issues on climate change with the
hope that it will be picked up by the SAARC Foreign
Ministers and pursued in the upcoming SAARC Summit to be
held in Sri Lanka. Dr. Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad, President,
Bangladesh Economic Association (BEA) and Chairman,
Bangladesh Unnayan Parishad (BUP) was the key speaker of
the press briefing along with SAFG and PFM members in
Bangladesh.
PFM Bangladesh presented 14 point demands to the SAARC
governments for immediate action and setting of
development and adaption strategies as climate change
threatens the socio-economic fabric of the region as
well as create SAARC Climate Change Fund to tackle
Climate Change.

Workshop and Debate Competition on MDGs
(June-July, 2008)

Three 2 day-long workshop, debate and cultural
competition on "Millennium Development Goals in
Bangladesh: Achievement and Our Role" was held on
11-12 June, 18-19 June and 9-10 July 2008 at Feni,
Rajshai and Barisal respectively to popularize the
concept of MDGs among the young adult and promote
future leadership for achieving MDGs. The programs
were jointly organized by CAMPE and Bangladesh
Debate Federation (BDF). Art, essay and quiz
competition on MDGs was also held along with the
debate. About 500 participants from different local
secondary schools participated in the 3 programs.
Renowned Teachers, Media Persons, Social Activists
and Present and Ex Members of Bangladesh Debate
Federation were present to encourage the
participants. Along with every debate program
another session on Effective Debating Skill was
facilitated by the BDF members.

Workshop on Geo-region Focused Reform of Primary Education in
Bangladesh held
(25 June, 2008)
A
workshop on "GE0-region Focused Reform of Primary Education in
Bangladesh" was held on 25 June, 2008 at the Chambers of Commerce
Hall Room, Chittagong. The workshop was organized by CODEC in
collaboration with CAMPE. About 70 participants from different
districts of Chittagong division especially Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT)
participated in the workshop. M. Habibur Rahman, Director,
Education, Save the Children, USA presented the key note paper and
Abul Momen, Residential Editor of The Prothom Alo moderated the
session. Prof. Anupam Sen, renowned Sociologist and Vice Chancellor
of Premier University was present as the Chief Guest of the
workshop. The program was presided by Kamal Sengupta, Deputy
Director, CODEC. Sayed-ul-Alam Kazal, Program Manager, CAMPE was
present as a Special Guest. The welcome address was delivered by
Munir Helal, Director, Education and Training, CODEC.

World Environment Day Observed
(5 June, 2008)
Like
all other years CAMPE also observed the World Environment Day on 5th
of June, 2008. The theme for this year is "Kick the Habit! Towards a
Low Carbon Economy". The
2 day long (5-6 June, 2008) programme was organized by the Ministry of Environment & Forest (MoEF) on behalf the Government of Bangladesh. The programme included Rally, Seminars and Environment Fair.
Hundreds of people from Government Offices, NGOs, Schools, Colleges, Universities and Environmentalists joined the colourful rally. The
2 day-long Environment Fair was inaugurated by Raja
Debasish Roy, Hon’ble Special Assistant to the Chief
Adviser, Ministry of Environment & Forest at the Osmani
Memorial Auditorium. A stall was also run by CAMPE for
disseminating the environment related publications of
CAMPE and its partners. Raja Debasish Roy visited
the CAMPE stall and appreciated the initiatives of CAMPE for awareness raising on different environmental issues.

Sub-National Level Consultation on “Quality Education and Status of
Teachers” held
(Sunday, 11 May 2008)
As
part of CAMPE’s plan to organize 6 divisional consultations on
“Quality Education and Status of Teachers” in collaboration with
different Teachers’ Association of Bangladesh, the consultation at
Rajshahi division was held on 11 May 2008 at the Rajshahi PTI
Auditorium. Renowned educationist and famous writer Professor
Hassan Azizul Haq was present at the consultation as Special
Guest while Dr. Ainul Haque, Bureau Chief, BSS Rajshahi and
Mr. A. K. M. Golam Mostafa, Assistant Director, Primary
Education, Rajshahi Zone was present as Guests of Honor.
Superintendent of Rajshahi PTI Mr. Rawshan Ali presided over
the consultation. Mr. K. M. Enamul Hoque, Program Manager,
CAMPE delivered the welcome address. Professor Nazmul Haq,
IER, Dhaka University presented the findings of a research work
titled “Status of Teachers in Bangladesh” conducted by UNESCO
Bangladesh. About 100 teachers from both primary and secondary
schools were present at the consultation and expressed their views
for ensuring quality education.

Tutor Refreshers Training under JSC Program held
(8 May - 6 June, 2008)
Bangladesh
Open University (BOU) and Campaign for Popular Education (CAMPE)
jointly initiated a project titled "Junior School Certificate (JSC)"
Program for NGO graduates and dropout from formal education system
especially for the disadvantaged. A total of 40 Open Distance
Learning (ODL) centers were established is association with 6
partner NGOs at field level. About 2000 learners were admitted in
those ODL centers. A total of 334 Tutors and 10 Supervisors are
involved with this program. CAMPE & BOU jointly organized and
conducted 3 days "Tutor Training" for all Tutors and Supervisors
before launching the ODL centers. After 8 months of implementation
of the program CAMPE & BOU jointly conducted 2 days "Refreshers
Tutor Training" for sharing field activities, lessons learnt,
tutorial services, success stories and failures etc. 334 Tutors and
10 Supervisors participated in 11 Batches from 8 May 2008 to 6 June
2008 at field level. The trainings were organized by the
implementing NGOs at their own training centers. Representatives
from CAMPE and BOU facilitated the training course. Chief Executives
and Area Coordinators of the implementing NGOs and the
representatives of the local administration attended the inaugural
and closing session of the training session.

2.8 million people participated in the World’s Biggest Lesson in
Bangladesh!!

We
are happy to announce that the total number of people participating
in the glorious World's Biggest Lesson throughout Bangladesh, as so
far reported to CAMPE GAW Control Room, is 2.8 million. We
are yet to receive reports from organizations in some parts of the
country and assume that the total participation will increase by a
significant more number. People from all walks of life participated
in the Biggest Lesson, along with leaders, local elites and public
functionaries who vowed fresh commitments towards establishing
everyone's right to quality basic education and creating an enabling
environment as well. The GAW observing partners including number of
unconventional organizations and professional bodies like members of
law enforcing agencies, fisher folks in the coastal belt, indigenous
people, domestic child workers, organizations working with visually
challenged people as well as people from disadvantaged groups who
are downtrodden among the downtrodden organized the event in their
vicinity and reported by fax, e-mail and cell-phone messages of
which validations signed by local elites followed.

Asian South Pacific Education Watch Report Launched
(21 April, 2008)
The
Asian South Pacific Education Watch Report was formally launched on
21 April 2008 (during the Global Action Week for Education, 21-26
April 2008) at the LGED Auditorium, Level-2, Agargaon, Dhaka. Ms.
Rasheda K. Choudhury, Hon’ble Adviser, MoPME, MoWCA, MoCA, Govt.
of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh was the chief guest. Mr.
Kazi Rafiqul Alam, Board Member, ASPBAE, Mr. Malama Meleisea,
Director & Representative, UNESCO Bangladesh, Mr. Theo Oltheten,
First Secretary Education, EKN were attended as special guests.
Mr. Kazi Fazlur Rahman, Former Advisor, Caretaker Government &
Chairperson, Education Watch Advisory Board, Bangladesh chair the
session. A nine member delegations from the Asian and South Pacific
Countries were attended the session and present their specific
country Education Watch findings. Prof. Kazi Saleh Ahmed,
former Vice Chancellor, Jahangir Nagar University presented
Bangladesh findings.
